A’s trump Reds in Game 7, win ‘72 World Series

The Oakland Athletics captured their first title in 42 years and won the first world title in the Bay Area after beating the Reds, 3-2, in Game 7 of the 1972 World Series on Oct. 22.
Gene Tenace was awarded the World Series MVP after hitting four home runs in the series. He hit just five during the regular season.

Henderson breaks stolen base record

On May 1, 1991, Rickey Henderson made Major League history when he stole base No. 939, passing Lou Brock for the most all-time.
Henderson, who played for Oakland at the time of his historical moment, finished with 1,406 stolen bases in his career.
That day in 1991, the Athletics beat the Yankees, 7-4.

McGwire dents scoreboard with blast

On April 30, 1997, Mark McGwire took the term home run blast to another level when he hit a monster shot at Jacobs Field in Cleveland.
According to reports, the homer would have traveled 533 feet if it was not impeded by the stadium itself.
Oakland won the game, 11-9, and Jason Giambi scored on the two-run McGwire homer.
